Top Video Games That Are Free
Hearthstone also is known as Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a free-to-play collectible card game and in my opinion (and lots of other people’s opinion) the best card game out there right now in terms of aesthetics, replayability, and originality. Hearthstone literally gets new expansion packs every couple of months and this is a testament to the fact that the game was released in Spring 2014 on all platforms and it still remains the most popular card game in the world and many players still play it from back then. The game has quite a few hundred cards all containing unique abilities (too many to address in this article). The game is totally free although packs are available to buy to speed up the process of building your desired deck however the game allows you to gain gold (the currency in the game used to buy packs) by winning games with every three games you win you get 10 gold(a pack costs 100 gold with multiple packs from different expansions available). Furthermore, there is Tavern Brawl which changes once a week giving you a free pack for your first win and also a mode called Arena(it costs 150 gold to enter or $1.99) where you are provided with a random class and a random set of cards and you have to try and get 12 wins with only 3 losses allowed, each win increases the reward pool, this is the best way to advance quickly but it requires a bit of luck but a lot of skill and experience.
Dota 2 is a competitive arena style game which is similar to another game on this list called League of Legends (but we’re not taking sides), Dota 2 makes the list of top video games that are free due to the fact that there that it is one of the best games of its kinds and is played by over 1 million players daily as well as being the game with the biggest eSports competition (and also the biggest prize pool which is currently in 2017 at $24 million). In the game there are only two sides who both compete to destroy the enemy’s base called ‘The Ancient’ while also destroying other structures along the way such as NPC spawn points and towers which is optional but recommended.
League of Legends
League of Legends is the other MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) on the list and is known as being one of the original ones too with League of Legends release in 2009, as of January 2014 LoL 67 million people play the game a month with over 27 million games a day. The games basic mechanics and objectives are similar to Dota 2 but many people prefer League of Legends for its bigger variety of champions as well as more frequent updates and it’s much better anti-hacking and anti-ragequitting precautions. The game is funded through micro transactions like all rather games on this list.
Set in a futuristic setting, the players play as a Tenno warriors (ancient race of war fighting aliens that have awoken from a century long sleep) and you must now battle against multiple races; the Grineer (a matriarchal race of militarized and deteriorated human clones built upon metal, blood, and war), the Corpus (a mega corporation with advanced robotics and laser technology built upon profit), the Infested (disfigured victims of the Technocyte virus) and finally the Sentients ( an alien force of mechanical beings returning from the Tau system). The game is a third person shooter which allows you to use your environment to your advantage a feature that is either non-existent in shooters or poorly executed, but fortunately this feature is well done in Warframe.
Path of Exile
Path of Exile is an action role-playing game with predominant hack and slash features developed and published by Grinding Gear Games and its beta released for Microsoft Windows in January 2013, the game is constantly compared to another popular actio role playing game known as Diablo (every true gamer knows this game :D) for its gameplay mechanics and the games aesthetics. A cool feature of the game is that all of the game’s maps are randomly generated (excluding the central encampments) adding tons of replayability. The game furthermore has no in-game currency instead all items you can find in the game can be traded with some items being more valuable than others and of cours *cough *cough all items can be bought in the games store
This cyberpunk themed first person shooter was released in 2012 by the conveniently named Zombie Studios (which have now become Hardsuit Labs) and Perfect World Entertainment. Blacklight: Retribution is a first person shooter that is only available in multiplayer mode with the classic first person game modes such as Capture the Flag, Kill Confirmed, King of the Hill and of course Domination, the game is also supported in Virtual Reality. The game’s profits come from selling customizations such as different helmet, leg and body armor as well as weapons but all of the items can be found by drops by just playing the game a shit ton!
Eve Online is a space-based, persistent world massively multiplayer online role playing game which means that if you get into this you should probably say goodbye to your social life. The game allows you to have jobs which include mining, manufacturing and even piracy. However, the game is known for its complexity and in-depth-ness with over 7,500 solar systems available to explore with the game’s main gameplay mechanic taking place in a spaceship. The game is also popular due to its freedom with little restriction on griefing with players being able to steal from other players, extort them and make them be killing my other NPC’s
Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is a first person shooter with a twist, the game is made up of nine classes(Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Demoman, Heavy, Engineer, Medic and Sniper), the game is heavily team based but it is popular for its enjoyable gameplay despite its often competitive nature. The game is popular for its enjoyable and casual nature with hats being the rarest and most valuable in game item and believe there is an abundance of them, the game is totally free to play there are no restrictions on the maps you can you play on or the weapons you can play with as they can all be received by playing the game long enough and getting the drops, items can also be opened from crates.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
This massively multiplayer game based on the Knights of the Republic Star Wars role-playing games, is the best free Star Wars game out there, the game is developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts and it is one of the most expensive games to develop ever with a cost estimated to be around $200 million however this seemed to be worth it as within days of its release the game had millions of subscriptions making it the fastest growing MMO to date. The game was originally released needing a subscription but eventually adopted a free to play model to boost its user base but there are still features that avid players can subscribe for and of course micro transactions.
Smite is a third person multiplayer game which allows the player to control a God and use them in team based combat and objective orientated gameplay. The main gameplay mode in Smite is called Conquest where players are divided into two teams of five and have to destroy the opposing team’s Titan while also taking out the enemies Phoenixes which act like towers. Smite has been praised as a third person League of Legends. The games makes its money through microtransactions which sell skins for the Gods and also you can pay to unlock Gods without the need to earn them.
TrackMania Nations Forever
TrackMania Nations Forever is the only free game in the TrackMania series, it features a solo campaign with 65 unique racing tracks and the new track editor feature which allows for any player to create their dream track. Furthermore in the game’s multiplayer you have the option to represent your own country adding that extra competitiveness. The game is
Planetside 2 is a massively multiplayer game and believe me this is, to say the least, in Planetside 2 you can literally take part in battles along with thousands of other players, the game revolves around fighting for your faction in gaining control over the sectors on the continents of Auraxis with continents being captured or locked once a faction controls 90% of the sectors in a continent. The game is free to play but allows you to buy cosmetic items as well as in-game convenience items such as camouflage for your vehicles and weapons.
War Thunder is a massively multiplayer video game with a unique twist as instead of it being your classic shooter instead it is based around vehicles (with the player not actually being able to exit the vehicles), the combat takes place in the air with the player being able to control planes starting from pre World War 2 up to the Modern era, there is land combat with tanks and artillery vehicles being available from the same eras and a naval mode with Battleships is currently in beta since March 2017 but is set to be released very soon. The game is totally free with micro transactions available in buying vehicles as well as boosters and power ups allowing you to progress faster up the tech tree(which sees you start with slower less powerful vehicles and eventually get into Modern vehicles with Vietnam War era vehicles soon to be released as of writing this).
Marvel Heroes is Marvel’s first attempt at freemium content, the game is an action role playing game which from my view is very smart as what die-hard Marvel fan wouldn’t want to roleplay as his favorite Marvel hero or villain? The game’s storyline begins with Doctor Doom obtaining the Cosmic Cube and attempting to defeat the Watcher, we won’t spoil anymore but the game currently features over 100 playable authentic Marvel characters. The game includes many micro transactions but it is possible for a free to play gamer to unlock pretty much all of the items and content that you can unlock with your hard earned cash.
Paladins has long been accused as an Overwatch clone however the game was released in beta a year before Overwatch was released and despite the games being similar they are not identical with the situation being similar to the Dota 2 vs League of Legends copying accusations(two free games on this list of the top video games that are free). Paladins has 4 characters classes; Front Line, Damage, Support and Flank with currently 31 champions with more being released every couple of months. The game is a team based first person shooter that has classic game modes such as Capture the Point (known as siege in the game), Payload and some more unique ones such as Survival where teams need to try and survive with no respawns as well as poisonous fog they need to avoid and Onslaught where teams battle in a large map to capture control points and and gain points.
